Beyond that, if you enjoy running offshore, Elk Rapids, Charlevoix, Boyne City, Bay Harbor, Petoskey and Harbor Springs can all be round tripped in a day from Traverse City. Charlevoix is just under two hours and Petoskey just under 30 minutes farther.
The Leelanau Peninsula offers some of the most beautiful scenery on earth. A start at Leland’s Harbor puts the Manitou Islands, Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore and Frankfort within a days range to be explored… Having fun yet?
Trailering AMBITIOUS to Cheboygan opens up the Inland Waterway — including passage through the Cheboygan River Lock raising us to Mullet, Burt and Crooked Lakes and Indian River. A fabulous day transiting northern Michigan via boat! Cheboygan also puts the Eastern Straights and Upper Peninsula within reach for exciting day cruises that include Mackinac Island, St. Ignace, the Le Cheneaux Islands…even Sault St. Marie and the Locks!
A short trailer run over to Elk Rapids opens up the Chain-O-Lakes from Elk Lake thru Lake Skegamog into the Torch River to Torch Lake then the Clam River to Clam Lake. This adventure must include a burger at the famous Dockside!
Incidentally, if you’ve never had a fine meal aboard a vessel on a still evening near dusk in a quiet bay … well … you have my number, right?

What to bring on a charter boat is a good question. It’s hard to answer, because it depends on individual needs, activity, season, possible weather range — yadda yadda yadda …
I did, however, answer one fella and his wife when he asked. I told him, ” Bring half of what you think you need … and twice the money.”
They showed up in swim suits and T-shirts, and ended up six hours later with take out lobster on the swim platform with their toes in the water facing a sunset. Priceless.

Consider going out and plopping down a hundred thousand dollars on a boat and putting in 35 years of running watercraft in and around the Great Lakes, versus, flipping a few hundred dollars to the captain who will deliver that same experience. Sounds like a fair deal. This is really the axiom that drives the charter boat industry.
I operate AMBITIOUS in a simple manner. AMBITIOUS fueled with crew and ice – $250 an hour. Hourly rate can fluxuate on lower fuel consumption tours.
